Safe working practices in low temperatures (GPG6)

2002

A cold environment can be an unsafe location for a refrigeration service engineer to work, accidents regularly occur. Information from The Health and Safety Executive identifies 359 accidents and one fatality in cold storage areas over the last five years. There would have been many more accidents that were not reported.  The refrigeration service engineer must ensure he creates a safe working environment for the task to be performed.

This bulletin highlights dangers that may be present and makes recommendations for a safe working environment. It cannot cover every eventuality, therefore safety vigilance at all times is essential.
