Overview

This paper presentation from new IOR President Mike Creamer will describe the development of an oil-free compressor technology - the Centrifugal Vapour Compressor (CVC). 

The initial CVC development focussed on a 400kW high compression ratio compressor for simultaneous cooling and heating. Following successful bearing tests at 21,000 rpm, the development then moved forward to more conventional compression ratios for RACHP applications and the first prototype compressor was based on a cooling capacity of 125kW, this running at a nominal speed of 39,000rpm and at 49,000 rpm for higher ambient / higher compression ratio requirements.

This new approach to oil-free compressor design is intended to reach a cooling capacity of up to 650kW. All work to date has been based on refrigerants HFC134a and HFO1234ze(E).

This paper will provide a broad overview of the CVC from initial concept to the attainment of protective patents and will be followed by a panel question session.
