Cooling challenges for mission critical facilities
A mission critical facility is one which has high reliability requirements; where plant and process must have continuous availability and any service outage results in a seriously detrimental business impact. The building services designs for such environments should be fault tolerant and concurrently maintainable, achieved through redundant components operating at part load or in standby with multiple distribution paths to reduce probability of failure. A mission critical data centre or server room contains IT equipment with high and increasing heat densities. This trend means that traditional cooling designs struggle to deliver the required performance. They are also typically relatively inefficient; however the market is adverse to risk and hence often conservative about innovations in this area. The cooling challenges for mission critical facilities are to provide cost effective, energy efficient, high reliability solutions for high heat densities which appeal to the marketplace.
