Commercial Sales Manager - AHT Cooling Systems UK and member of the WiRACHP Planning Group.
Could you share a bit about your background?
I was always better at Maths and Science at school, I completed my A levels in Maths and physics and my intention was to work at the MET office in Exeter ( where I grew up) however, at the same time I became extremely passionate about politics and decided to choose to study Philosophy at university. I graduated in 2012 from UWE in Bristol. The job market was saturated with graduates and it quickly dawned on me that whilst I loved my course, it was never going to provide a graduate job for me. Me and my now husband decided at this point to move back to Herefordshire where he grew up as his late father was unwell. We were both actively looking for roles and began temporary employment at Arctic Circle. 11 years later we were both still there!
What attracted you to the industry?
There was zero attraction; I wanted to work with people. I was passionate about people. However, I loved every moment of those first 6 months at Arctic. The intention was to work there until I found another job. I was offered a graduate programe locally to us, however I turned this down, as the 6 months that had passed reignited my brain's default, which was STEM. I learnt so much about engineering, administration and how businesses operated and I felt truly a part of something.
What organisation do you work for and what is our role? How long have you been with the company?
I worked at Arctic Circle for 11 years, progressing from Sales Co-ordinator to Sales engineer, and finally, in 2018 I settled into the role of Commercial Manager. Unfortunately, Arctic Circle was put into Administration in 2023, and I needed to find another role which would ignite my passion. I recently joined AHT as Commercial Sales Manager with a view to providing customers with turnkey solutions mainly in the retail sector. This fits in nicely with my previous experience.
What do you enjoy most about your job, and what are the biggest challenges you face?
I mentioned previously that my passion is for people, so I really love engaging with other people and companies on different projects. I find that this is the best way for me to learn and to add value. The biggest challenge like all sales roles is finding the people who want to talk to you. I have become so passionate about the industry I don’t understand why people wouldn’t want to talk about it!
Where do you see your career developing?
I have been very fortunate in my career to have had access to progression. If I were to have answered this 12 years ago, I would never have envisaged myself where I am. I would like to progress my learning and development, the industry changes so rapidly, it's important for me to keep up to date. One of my skills lies is strategic development, I would like the opportunity to explore this further in the coming years.
What do you like about this industry?
It's all about the people and the passion for me. The concept that you can walk into most buildings and there will be an element of cooling, it's so critical for society to have Refrigeration it's almost become an expected luxury – it's easy to forget how many societies globally do not have access to cooling when required. I have met so many wonderful people over the years, who have so much to offer and share, and often their passion also lines up with my own. It's much more engaging than the Christmas meet-up with my non-fridge family!
What is your career highlight or proudest achievement?
Working with Apprentices and watching them develop into passionate future leaders of our industry. Two individuals I had the pleasure of working closely with have won awards for their exceptional work. It is truly rewarding seeing the success of others.
What advice would you give to women who are looking to enter or advance in the refrigeration and heating industry?
I feel very fortunate to have found this industry when I did. Who knows what else I would end up doing! For Women looking to enter the industry or advance their careers. Do not be afraid to be seen. It can be hard at times surrounded by people who have so much experience but listen and absorb and if you have an idea, share it!
