Hybrid cooling solutions - night cooling and mechanical refrigeration
The paper provides an overview of systems that utilise thermal mass in conjunction with night ventilation. He will give an introduction to the concepts behind this technique and describe in detail the development of a system (CoolDeck). CoolDeck is designed to improve the performance of systems where air is ventilated through false ceiling and floor voids to access “hidden mass”. The system improves thermal interaction between the circulating air and the thermal mass of the slab.
This design has been used successfully in a series of installations at Stevenage Borough Council offices, and Nick will offer valuable insights into how the system has performed in practice. The initial installation was based on using thermal mass in conjunction with night ventilation. Subsequent installations have incorporated phase change material into the system to enhance thermal capacity. The two most recent phases of work have used hybrid cooling solutions based on night cooling and mechanical refrigeration. The paper describes these systems using examples based on local refrigeration and central refrigeration.
