Solar cooling systems
This paper focuses on a new, sustainable, refrigeration technology. Solar cooling offers a sustainable and low energy solution for refrigeration applications. For most applications, there is a coincidence between peak solar gain and peak cooling demand. By using solar energy to drive a heat-powered cycle, it is possible to produce cooling virtually coincident with the refrigeration demand and thus a viable technology. This paper presents the state-of-the-art of solar cooling. It describes the technologies, applications, efficiencies, economics and thermodynamics of solar cooling systems. Efficiency and economic evaluation with comparison of competing designs of solar collectors and sorption and mechanical compression refrigeration plant is provided. Application of flat-plate solar collectors with sorption chillers for cold generation is analysed using the concept of available energy as the performance indicator.
