This paper reviews the reasons for current concerns about health and comfort issues in large passenger aircraft and gives a brief overview of some of the research programmes that are addressing these issues. The paper also reviews current aircraft cabin environmental control systems and describes a new research facility that has been built in the UK to simulate aircraft cabin environments. The paper also describes the design of an innovative hybrid vapour compression and adsorption dehumidification system built to provide realistic humidity levels inside the aircraft cabin simulator.
