Bringing Superconducting Detectors in From the Cold

Advanced superconducting detector technologies offer considerable performance advantages over conventional photon-counting detectors, but the challenges of operation with liquid helium have been a significant barrier to widespread use.

This paper is the winner of the IOR J&E Hall Gold Medal. It describes the design and construction of the first practical, cryogen-free systems for superconducting single-photon detectors. This advance has enabled this infrared photon-counting technology to be employed in a range of leading edge applications including quantum communications, remote sensing and laser medicine.
