Measuring the effect of refrigerant loss on cost and carbon emissions (GPG89)

The refrigeration and air conditioning industry accounts for around 15% of the electrical energy used within the
UK, estimated to cost £2.5 billion per year. Despite this considerable operating cost, some refrigeration systems are
suspected to lose up to 20% of their charge each year, resulting in increased energy consumption, emissions and
service costs. This bulletin explains an experiment that has been carried out to measure realistically what happens to
these costs and emissions when refrigerant leaks from a system.
