Frost Heave Associated with Cold Rooms and Cold Stores (GPG 12)
Frost heave is the formation of ice in the form of an ice shaped lens in the ground below the floor slab. The ice lens can take many years to create, but once established it is extremely powerful and will raise a concrete floor many centimetres; lift and delaminate wall insulation panels and move doors so that they do not fit. In extreme circumstances internal columns will be pushed up by the ice lens and lift the complete building structure.
Insulating a cold room or cold store floor will delay the onset of the problem but not prevent frost heave from occurring. To prevent it, the heat being drawn through the floor slab and floor insulation is replaced in various forms described in this bulletin.
