Electrical Safety – Electricity and the Law (GPG64)

All electro-mechanical equipment has a requirement to be electrically safe. Each year across all sectors, there are about 1000 serious accidents at work involving electric shock or burns reported to the Health and Safety Executive. One in three of these will result in major injury. About one in forty of these will be fatal.

Those using electricity may not be the only ones at risk: poor electrical installations and faulty electrical appliances can lead to fires, which may also cause death of injury to others. Most workplaces and types of work in this country have or use electricity in one way or another. From 2016 the penalties for health and safety violations got much tougher resulting in average fines trebling.

This Guide provides information on how electricity effects human health, the key legislation workplaces need to follow and the role of the Health and Safety Executive, and the relevant codes and standards in this area.
