Keeping Refrigerant in the System - Preventing Refrigerant Leakage (GPG74)

HFC refrigerant prices are increasingly unpredictable, their future supply is uncertain due to the phase down and, for some applications, there will be bans on service and maintenance from 2020. Now, more than ever, it is important to ensure that existing HFC systems are and remain leak-tight. Some years ago the IOR carried out a series of investigations to identify the main preventable points of leakage in systems of all types. The results were presented as REAL Zero – refrigerant emissions and loss zero. Those end users who have taken on the recommendations of REAL Zero have managed to reduce their refrigerant use substantially and improved the efficiency and reliability of existing systems at the same time.

This Good Practice Guide provides a list of 10 tips for designers and specifiers and examines the common leakage points.

REAL Zero Guidance Notes are available as free downloads from the IOR website at www.ior.org.uk
