Tackling Skills Shortages

7 Feb 2024 13:00 to 15:00

The matter of skills is more critical than ever as our sector needs to recruit new people to fill vacancies and retrain others to meet the demands of new technologies and refrigerants all at a time when there is a shortage of training places and trainers to deliver.

This IOR is co-ordinating work on some of these issues through its Education Committee and this open meeting will look at how we are working to tackle the skills crisis, what is currently available from the IOR and what you can do to help. Some of the topics to be covered:

  • How to get young people aware of careers in refrigeration - what works
  • Revising the fundamentals - we look at a new FantasticFridges.com website that provides free video resources and the IOR basics webinars for students
  • Creative approaches to filling vacancies - recruiting ex-military and other trades, developing inhouse staff with mentoring and alternatives to apprenticeship training, using work experience and partnering on new TLevels
  • Supporting colleges to improve training capacity and quality
  • Skills specifications for efficient heat pump performance, design engineers and rachp mechanics

Many of these topics are already the subject of IOR Education and Training Guidance Notes which can be downloaded free from the IOR website, but there are also regular network and working group meetings driving these initiatives forward that members can take part in.
