Heat Pump Efficiency Webinar Training Programme

Module 1 - Heat Pumps -the Basics

  • Access the recording of module 1 here  (The recording has been edited to remove external source material)
  • Access the slides for module 1 here

As people working in the RACHP sector knows a heat pump is not just an elaborate boiler. Module 1  discusses heat pump technology and explains the basic principles. Module 1 is designed for people looking to refresh their knowledge or learn more about this increasingly popular method of heating.

Topics included:

  • How does a heat pump work?
  • The heat pump cycle
  • The use of LogP-H diagrams and what you can learn from them
  • Refrigerants
  • Compressors
  • Low-Temperature Heat Source
    • Boreholes/Seawater/River Water
    • Air
  • Transcritical heat pumps vs. Normal condensation heat pumps.
    • Differences
    • Points of awareness

Module 2 - Designing a heating system in a new building with the heat pump in mind

Module 2 is designed for those who already have an understanding of how to design a heat pump heating and cooling system. This module will not explain how to design a system but focus solely on how to maximise efficiency when doing so.

  • Access the recording of module 2 here
  • Access the slides for module 2 here
  • Download the template heat pump assessment template here
  • Access the formulas required to carry out the exercises here

Module 2 will explain the behaviour of a heat pump heating system and explore what needs to be considered when designing a heating system for maximum energy efficiency in a new building that will use a heat pump for the heating and cooling requirements.

Topics included:

  • Internal heat loads
  • Load distribution during night and day
  • Ventilation loads
  • Heating system control
  • Ventilation system control

Module 3 -Retrofitting an existing building to accommodate a heat pump as the main source of heating

Module 3 is designed for those who already have an understanding of how to design a heat pump heating and cooling system. This module will not explain how to design a system but focus solely on how to maximise efficiency when doing so.

  • Access the recording of module 3 here
  • Access the slides for module 3 here
  • Access the formulas required to carry out the exercises here

This module will explore what needs to be considered when retrofitting an existing building to accommodate a heat pump as the main source of heating.

Topics included:

  • Data acquisition on demands
  • What can we use?
  • What can we modify?
  • What do we need to buy?
  • What system tweaks are required
  • Using air as a heat carrier
  • Reducing temperature demand in the heating system

The Trainer: Gert Nielsen.Gert Nielsen

For the last 15 years, Gert has shared his expertise by delivering lectures and performing roadshows for the Norwegian HVAC Association. Gert will share best practice as well as common mistakes made when designing, installing and running heating systems based on heat pumps.
