This downloadable Code is for the use and guidance of everyone concerned with compression refrigerating systems utilising Refrigerant R-717 (ammonia). "Everyone" means every person with responsibility through ownership, consultancy, design, construction, installation, commissioning, operation, maintenance, inspection, repair, modification or testing of a system. Attention of such people is drawn to their wider responsibilities as defined within the provisions of the Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. In particular, they are reminded that when a system has been altered or repaired the pressure envelope must be proved again by testing at least the altered or repaired sections together with any other parts of the system which cannot be isolated from them. Under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000, appropriate written schemes of examination and  ssociated inspections must have been conducted and under Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations 2002 the various regulations associated with assessment of risk, reduction of risk, zoning, marking, instructing must be in place

Larger refrigeration systems have been brought within the scope of legislation under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSS Regulatons), which stipulate requirements to be met, by designers, suppliers, installers and users. More recently the Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23EC (PED) implemented in the UK by the Pressure Equipment Regulations 1999 (PER), place duties on anyone who designs, manufacturers or supplies pressure equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure greater than 0.5 bar. Such systems must be designed, manufactured and assessed in accordance with the requirements of the PED. The ongoing safety of the system with respect to the hazard of pressure continues to be covered by the requirements of the PSS Regulations.

The specific refrigeration safety Standard has also become more detailed, with BS EN 378:2008 current at the time of publication of this Code. The Institute decided that a Code giving guidance specifically on ammonia systems remains relevant, but revision was required to take into account the changes to legislation and Standards. Nothing in this Code is intended to conflict with UK regulations or British Standards.
