Retrofit replacements for R404A and R507A (GN31)

This Guidance Note is designed to cover the use of a replacement refrigerant in commercial R404A refrigeration applications. It does not apply to transport and industrial refrigeration or to small critically charged ‘white goods’ systems. This Guidance Note only applies to the replacement of R404A with refrigerant of the same safety classification (A1).

The F-Gas Regulations have placed a time limit on the availability of HFC refrigerants that have a high global warming potential (GWP). In particular the two of the most widely applied refrigerants R404A and R507A with GWPs of 3,922 and 3,985 respectively, are currently being phased down.  R507A is an azeotropic mixture of two HFCs mainly used in industrial flooded systems, but also found in some commercial DX systems. It is therefore not the intention of this guidance note to cover the replacement of R507A unless used in a direct expansion (DX) system.
