To celebrate International Women in Engineering Day, the IOR is dipping into its library of webinars to bring you a selection of technical presentations from female engineers and researchers. It is a fantastic opportunity to revisit some award-winning research and brush up on your technical knowledge.

12:30 pm: TechTalk - Improving Cooling and Oil Distribution in Oil-Injected Screw Compressors, Nashueen Basha, Imperial College London

Hear about the 2022 IOR Ted Perry Award Winning student's research into the performance and reliability of oil-injected screw compressors. You will also discover the results of case studies, tests on existing rigs and instrumental detail which show the effect of using different injection points and how to reduce power losses due to temperature rise.

2:00 pm: Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and their Potential in Adsorption Heat Pumps, Eman Hussein, University of Birmingham

Adsorption is considered to be a sustainable alternative to conventional technologies used in cooling as it can be operated using renewable energy resources or waste heat having zero CO2 emissions. In this presentation the future of adsorption will be discussed, you will learn what are adsorption heat pumps and conventional adsorbents used and how by improving the properties of MOFs the system can be improved.

The presenters

Jane Gartshore FInstR is a Director of Cool Concerns, a training and consultancy business for the commercial refrigeration and air conditioning industry.  She is Past President of the Institute of Refrigeration (IOR), former chair of the IOR's Education and Training Committee and one of the first women to be included in INWED's Top 50 Women in Engineering when it launched in 2016.

Laura Bishop MInstR is a chartered mechanical engineer and Director of the award-winning renewable energy engineering consultancy Infinitas-Design. She is the current Chair of the Ground Source Heat Pump Association and was included as one of the INWED Top 50 Engineers in 2020.

Catarina Marques FInstR is a Senior Research Fellow at London South Bank University and the Project Manager for GreenSCIES a fifteen-partner consortium on smart local energy networks that combine low-carbon heat, power and mobility. She is a Trustee of the Institute of Refrigeration and won the Ted Perry Award for Student Research in 2013. 

Nausheen Basha is a Chartered Engineer and Project Manager at Imperial’s Chemical Engineering Department with keen interests in fluid dynamics, multiphase flows, computing and improving diversity in engineering. Winner of the Ted Perry Award for Student Research in 2022  - she was also included in the INWED Top 50 Women in Engineering in the same year.

Eman Hussein obtained her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Birmingham, Her PhD thesis was titled ‘Numerical And Experimental Evaluation of Advanced Metal-Organic Framework Materials for Adsorption Heat Pumps. In 2019 she was awarded the Ted Perry Award for Student Research.
