The IOR participated in the Reef-UKC Research Network Workshop last week, delivering a keynote on the shift to environmentally-friendly refrigerants.

Talking about the keynote Dermot Cotter FInstR said "As the UK strives toward its Net Zero targets, the refrigeration industry faces mounting challenges—including rising ambient temperatures and the adoption of new technologies. While the ultimate goal is net zero cooling, harnessing waste heat from refrigeration systems offers a valuable opportunity to support low-carbon heating. However, the shift to environmentally friendly refrigerants introduces concerns around flammability, toxicity, high pressures, and in some cases, increased energy consumption. This session explored the properties of these refrigerants, evaluated the associated safety and performance challenges, and highlighted the technologies and regulatory frameworks that enable sustainable refrigeration system design."
